When setting up a Meet you can invite participants, allow individuals to view the meet, or a combination of both. In order to set up a Meet for live streaming you must set up the meet using Google Calendar which can be accessed at https://calendar.google.com/
Follow these steps:
Once in Google Calendar click Create
Give your new event a name and edit any details you'd like then click More options
Now click Add conferencing
Click Hangouts Meet
Now click the down arrow
Click Add live stream
Now at this point you can copy the live stream URL, highlighted below, and distribute it to your students. However if you add them as guests to this event they will be able to join the Meet as participants as the meet code will be visible in the calendar event. You can take some additional steps to create a new calendar event that will only provide them the live stream URL. Make sure you click Save
Follow these steps to create a new View Only event.
Find the event on your calendar select it and then click the pencil icon to edit it.
Click More Actions and select Create view-only event
In this new event you will notice the meet code is gone and there is an indicator this event is view only. Add guests to this event. Then click Save
When the time comes to host your Meet join the meet using the meet URL like you normally would. Live streaming will not start automatically though. You must start the live stream. You may see a pop up at the top of the screen asking you to start the stream. If you don't see that prompt just select the menu from the bottom right and click Start streaming
You should note that live streaming does not cause the event to record. If you would still like to record your event you will need to click the menu and select Record meeting
You will know your event is live when you see the LIVE indicator on the top left of your video feeed.
